Hamilton County court records are kept by the County/Family/Surrogate's Court Clerk in Indian Lake. This is one of the least populated counties in New York State, and the court system here works a bit differently than most other counties. There is no Supreme Court sitting in Hamilton County. Supreme Court sessions for Hamilton County take place in Fulton County instead. All other court records, from family law filings to surrogate matters, go through the Hamilton County clerk's office at 139 White Birch Lane in Indian Lake or at the courthouse on County View Drive in Lake Pleasant.

Hamilton County Court Records Office

The Hamilton County court clerk handles all County Court, Family Court, and Surrogate's Court records. The chief clerk is Araina Eldridge. You can reach the office at two phone numbers depending on which location you need.

Walk-in requests are handled during normal business hours. Bring the case name or index number if you have it. Staff can help with searches but the more details you give, the faster they can pull the right file. Copy fees run $0.65 per page with a $1.50 minimum. Certified copies cost more.

Supreme Court Records for Hamilton County

Hamilton County is one of the few places in New York where the Supreme Court does not hold sessions locally. If you need Supreme Court records for a case tied to Hamilton County, you have to go to Fulton County. The sessions take place at 223 W. Main Street in Johnstown, NY 12095.

This matters for civil cases over $25,000, divorce filings, and other matters that fall under Supreme Court jurisdiction. The case files are stored with the Fulton County Clerk, not in Hamilton County. Make sure you contact the right office before making a trip. Many people assume their Supreme Court case records are in the county where they live, but for Hamilton County residents, that is not the case.

Types of Court Records in Hamilton County

Hamilton County courts produce several types of records. County Court handles criminal cases and civil disputes up to $25,000. These records include indictments, plea deals, sentencing orders, and civil judgments. Family Court files cover custody petitions, child support orders, paternity cases, and orders of protection. Surrogate's Court records include wills, probate filings, estate accountings, and guardianship papers.

Under Judiciary Law Section 255, court clerks must keep accurate records and make them available for public inspection. Most court records are open. Family Court records have restricted access, and sealed cases are not available to the public under any court type.

Criminal records can get sealed under CPL Section 160.50 when a case is dismissed or ends in an acquittal. Sealed records do not show up in public searches. You would not find them through the OCA Criminal History Record Search or through the clerk's office.

Hamilton County does not have its own online case search portal. For a statewide search, the OCA Criminal History Record Search covers all 62 counties. The fee is $95 per name search. Results are based on exact name and date of birth matches.

The WebCivil Supreme portal lets you search Supreme Court civil cases by party name or index number. Since Hamilton County Supreme Court cases go through Fulton County, you would search there. The NYSCEF system stores documents for e-filed cases statewide.

For pending criminal cases, WebCriminal has limited coverage. It does not include Hamilton County courts. You would need to contact the clerk directly for criminal case status in this county.

The DOCCS Inmate Lookup is free and shows current state prison inmates. It does not cover local jail inmates or people on probation. For federal cases, check the PACER system through the Northern District of New York.

Court Records Access and Legal Framework

Court records in Hamilton County follow the same state rules as every other county in New York. Public access is the default. You do not need to be a party to the case. You do not need to explain why you want the records.
