Steuben County court records are managed by the County Clerk in Bath, the county seat. The county sits in the Seventh Judicial District of New York and has courts that handle civil, criminal, family, and probate matters. You can search some Steuben County court records through state online tools, but most files still need to be pulled in person at the courthouse. Steuben County Clerk and Court Records

The Steuben County Clerk keeps Supreme Court and County Court records at the courthouse in Bath. The clerk's office is the main hub for anyone who needs to pull a case file, get a certified copy, or look up a judgment in Steuben County. Copy fees for Steuben County court records follow the statewide schedule. Standard copies run $0.65 per page with a $1.50 minimum. County Court in Steuben handles felony criminal cases and civil disputes up to $25,000. It also hears appeals from local Town and Village Courts. The grand jury meets in County Court to consider felony indictments. Records from both Supreme Court and County Court are stored with the County Clerk.

Family Court deals with custody, child support, paternity, juvenile matters, and domestic violence petitions. Most Family Court records in Steuben County are confidential. Only the parties and their attorneys can view them. Juvenile delinquency and PINS cases are sealed by law. Surrogate's Court covers wills, estates, and guardianships. Corning City Court Records

Corning is the largest city in Steuben County. Corning City Court handles misdemeanor criminal cases, traffic violations, and civil matters up to $15,000 including small claims. Records from Corning City Court are kept separately from the County Clerk's files. You need to contact the City Court directly to get records from cases that started there. Cases that get bumped up to County Court or Supreme Court will eventually have their records transferred to the County Clerk.

Criminal cases that end in the defendant's favor are sealed under CPL Section 160.50. That covers dismissals and acquittals. Once sealed, those records drop off public databases. Law enforcement can still see them, but the general public cannot. This applies to cases in Corning City Court, County Court, and Supreme Court alike.

Court Records Access in Steuben County

Most Steuben County court records are open to the public. You do not have to be a party to a case to view the file. Walk into the clerk's office, ask to see a record, and staff will pull it for you.
